A guest post by Tricia Zinkowski, CMP
Communication is a field I’ve been passionate about for as long as I can remember. I’m a writer, through and through, but it wasn’t until I was about midway through my journalism degree that I realized that it isn’t just writing that inspires me—it’s listening to other people and communicating in a way that resonates with them. Anyone who has worked in communication knows that it isn’t what we say that matters; it’s more about what we hear. You can’t truly be a good communicator unless you understand what your audience is feeling. Before undergoing the Communication Management Professional (CMP) certification process, my education was in journalism and English. I wanted to add something a bit more communication-focused to that list, so I decided to go after the CMP certification and boy, am I ever glad I did!
Taking the plunge to advance your education and essentially my career was a simple, but not easy, choice for me. I have a family and a full-time career, and I also volunteer on my local chapter’s IABC board of directors. Needless to say, my life is busy. However, I didn’t let that stop me. During the process of my training and as I was gearing to take the CMP exam, I accepted a communications adviser position with a different organization. It’s safe to say, I don’t shy away from change or having a lot on my plate! Even after starting my new role, I was still determined to continue with the exam because I know that process helped me elevate my career to this point.
Becoming a CMP is a wise choice because it forces you to check yourself on how well you know this fast-paced, ever-changing field we work in. I love that the maintenance side of the certification encourages me to keep up-to-date with digital trends. By immersing myself in keeping up-to-date, I’m ensuring my skills remain relevant, while also applying my learning to my role. They say the only constant in life is change, and that couldn’t be truer in the communication field! This is why it’s so important for communication experts to become certified and to have our finger on the pulse at all times.
If you want to stand up and prove your expertise in communication, this certification is right for you!
